An Ounce of Preventions is Worth a Pound of Cure

Every day people suffer from conditions which can easily be cured by alternative methods such as chiropractic care. Most of these conditions are caused by environmental factors, repetitive trauma, stress, poor diet, injuries, or poor posture. To reduce your symptoms, these factors need to be minimized. Understanding your condition is the initial step to minimizing factors that cause your symptoms. Chiropractic care can help you alleviate or eliminate them and put you on the road to a pain-free life!

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is associated with tingling, numbness and or pain the hand, fingers, or wrist. Compression of the median nerve inside the carpal tunnel can cause these symptoms. The Carpal Tunnel itself is a small tunnel that is formed by the alignment of eight carpal bones in the wrist. A group of tendons, ligaments, and the median nerve run through this tunnel. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is associated with pressure of the median nerve and it is most commonly seen in individuals who perform repetitive tasks, such as computer work. Pressure on the median nerve can be caused by three ways:

1

Bad diet: American diet is typically high on fat, red meat, salt, and lots of other inflammatory substances. An inflammatory diet will promote water retention all over from internal organs to the lining of ligaments and tendons. An inflammatory diet can cause water retention in the Carpal Tunnel, and thus put pressure on the median nerve. This is also known to be the cause of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in pregnant women due to their higher water retention throughout pregnancy.

2

Overuse: each of the eight carpal bones in your hand can become subluxated or misaligned relative to each other due to overuse, or repetitive work. Ligaments become overstretched, and muscles in the forearm become tight.

3

Trauma: it is often the cause of misalignment of the carpal bones or the attachment of forearm and hands. Falls that involve hyperextension or hyperflexion of the wrist can cause symptoms associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

The medical approach may include a splint, anti-inflammatory drugs, diuretics, and in extreme cases injection of corticosteroids for temporary relief. Surgery is the last resort, and recovery can take months with no guarantee that you have rid yourself of the symptoms.

Chiropractic approach is less invasive, and involves finding the source of symptoms, as well as addressing them. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed conditions. Nerve entrapments that cause the same symptoms in hands and lower arms can happen in the neck region. Nerves that branch out of the upper part of spine go into arms, hands and fingers; thus involvement of the nerves in the neck is not uncommon. After a complete examination, neurological and orthopedic tests, and x-rays, I can determine the actual cause and place of nerve entrapment, and relieve pressure accordingly. To make your visit wholesome and more effective, I recommend life style and dietary changes, as well as stretches, strengthening exercises, and other physical modalities to be done at home. Chiropractic approach, is a complete and excellent choice for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and should be considered before more invasive treatments.

Headaches / Migraines

Headaches are a common sign of an interference with brain or nervous system. It is also one of many conditions that can benefit from spinal manipulations. If you are suffering from recurring headaches, the first step is to recognize it as a problem; it is only a symptom of something that is wrong.

Migraine is one of the more painful types of headaches, leaving the patient in bed and immobilized in severe cases. If you are suffering from repetitive migraine headaches, you may note visual changes, dizziness, or nausea. Migraines are divided into multiple types, all of which have the same etiology.

There is a structure at the top of your spine where it meets your brain which is called Superior Cervical Sympathetic Ganglion. This structure controls muscles, glands, and arteries that are around the base of the head. It is common for the cause of migraine headaches to be a misalignment of the top vertebrae in the spine where this Ganglion is located. If that is the case, a trained chiropractor is able to locate this malfunction, and by repositioning the vertebrae remove the pressure that is on the Ganglia and thus help improve migraine headaches. Most patients are headache free within four to eight treatments.

A good case history to determine the cause of your headache is very essential to determine whether your migraine is caused by vertebral malfunction or else. If you are suffering from severe or frequent headaches, or know someone who is, please share this information or call us at 949.922.3465 to schedule a free consultation.

Chiropractic and Kids

I am often asked if chiropractic can be helpful to children. You may be surprised to know that many spinal problems begin in childhood or even at birth. Birth process is one of the most traumatic experiences many of will ever go through. If you think about the incredible stress that a newborn child has to go through to become part of this world, it is not surprising to see how they can have misalignments in their spine through this process. Spinal segments can jammed or misaligned by the position of the baby in the womb, during labor, or birth process itself. As our babies grow, they fall multiple times per day to learn how to walk; this is traumatic to the spine as it is in its most sensitive growing phase. These apparently innocent, frequently occurring falls as well as automobile, or any other significant unsupported movement of the head and neck can create spinal misalignments.

What conditions in children can improve with chiropractic care?
Spine plays an extremely important role in protecting the nervous system, visceral organs, immune system and etc... Thus entrapment or pressure on the spinal nerves can cause a variety of conditions. Chiropractic care has been shown to help with such conditions some of which are as follows: Otitis media (chronic middle ear infection), colic, persistent earaches, asthma, ADD/ADHD, headaches and bed wetting.

How are children’s spinal problems evaluated and treated?
After a careful and extensive evaluation and multiple neurological and orthopedic exams specifically designed for young children, misalignments can be found. Chiropractors who are trained to evaluate pediatric patients will use gentle light finger-tip adjustments to correct spinal malfunctions.

What if our child doesn’t have any symptoms?
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The importance of a healthy spine and nervous system is paramount for your child’s future. Symptoms are always the last thing to show, and the first thing to go away; the same way you can have a cavity without any toothache, your child may have asymptomatic misalignments. Prevention is the best line of defense with regards to health. Regular chiropractic care in both children and adults have shown to help with improving immune system.

Is chiropractic care safe for children?
Proper adjustment provided by a chiropractor who is well trained and specializes in pediatric care is both safe and effective.

The best time to get your spine checked is when you’re an infant. If you have children, bring them in for a free spinal screening. Call us at 949.922.3465 to make an appointment.

Sciatica

Sciatica is defined as a lower back pain that refers into buttock, one or both legs involving the sciatic nerve. Patients with sciatica suffer from a wide range of symptoms. From minimal to severe, from local pain in the lower back and buttock to weakness and tingling into the lower legs and feet. Loss of sensation and weakness are in more severe cases of sciatica. Compression of sciatic nerve can be caused by misalignments of the lumbar spine, herniation of lower back vertebra, pregnancy, childbirth, tumors, diabetes, trauma, or inflammation of the piriformis muscle.

Medical approach to treatment of sciatica may involve painkillers, muscle relaxers, injections, or surgery.

Sciatica is often misdiagnosed due to its many sources; the first step is to determine the cause sciatica. A complete medical history and physical, neurological, and orthopedic examination is needed as well as x-rays to form a correct diagnosis. The exams are reviewed and presented to patients with specific and individualized recommendations. Stretches, exercises, diet changes, as well as adjustments and various physical therapy modalities may be recommended to patients to better reduce the inflammation and compression on the sciatic nerve.

Spinal manipulations, or adjustments from a skilled chiropractor can free up restricted movement of the spine and helps restore misaligned vertebral bodies into their proper positions. By doing so, inflammation of the nerve and therefore of muscular origin will be greatly reduced. Adjustments will reduce muscle spasm, pain, tingling, numbness, and other symptoms related to sciatica. In extreme cases, adjustments are not indicated, and patients are referred for surgery.

Whatever the cause of your sciatic pain is, seek the advice of your chiropractor, or primary physician; it is much easier to treat symptoms when they are initially noticed rather than a chronic pain. Call us today at 949.922.3465 to make an appointment for a free consultation.

Low Back Pain, Feet, Legs

There are various reasons why you may have lower back pain.

1

Sprain or strain of the lower back typically due to macro-trauma such as car accident or repetitive micro-trauma such as prolonged and daily sitting behind a computer.

2

Misalignment of the lumbar spine, often exacerbated by increased or decreased lumbar curvature.

3

Disc herniations, bulges, and nerve entrapments.

4

Being overweight and having your body carry more weight than it is designed to do.

All of the above can cause inflammation and pain in the area.  In some cases inflammation of the lumbar spine or the nerves in the area may cause loss of sensation, weakness, tingling and numbness of the lower extremities.  Proper medical history, examination, neurological, orthopedic evaluation, and x-rays are necessary to determine the origin of lower back pain.  Chiropractic care for lower back pain is based on the concept that restriction of range of motion at each vertebral body can cause inflammation, interference with the nervous system as well as pain and lack of mobility. If the restriction or misalignment is removed through adjustments, the vertebral bodies can move freely and thus reducing the inflammation and symptoms of pain and discomfort.  Research has in regards with chiropractic care shows its effectiveness and multiple clinical trials indicate that chiropractic care is safe and successful.

Neck Pain

Have you ever awoken in the morning with pain, discomfort, and stiffness in your neck? Your neck is comprised of seven vertebrae, which are surrounded by muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Most commonly these vertebrae are misaligned due to poor posture, forward head weight, accidents or falls, whiplash and or repetitive use of the upper extremities. This can cause neck pain, discomfort, tingling and numbness into the arms and hands, as well as tightness in the mid-back and shoulder area.

Your treatment will be customized to your specific situation so that your results are the quick and long lasting. X-ray of your neck will be evaluated and in a case of abnormal curvature, rebuilding of the cervical spine may be recommended. Chiropractic adjustments, along with physical therapy and traction can help restore movement and alleviate muscle tightness and spasms.

Poor Posture

Your posture is like a double sided mirror. As you may have heard your mom tell you to sit up straight at the dinner table or at your computer desk, it can influence a lot more than just your appearance. Your spine holds your nervous system which in turn controls your entire body. Now imagine your posture being a representative of how your spine and nerves are being stretched. Poor posture will cause an interference with the nervous system and can cause a variety of disease.

Improving your posture is going to take some work especially with the habits of today's modern living, but in the long run will increase your chances of living a healthier life. If the health of your nervous system is not your priority, you must be warned research has shown that erect posture has also been linked success in the business world and taking off a few years off your real age. So if success or looking younger is your priority, read on.

To discuss what things can be done to improve your posture, the need to understand what good posture is becomes important. Your spine has three major curves that hold your body erect and create an "S" shaped curvature throughout the spine. This "S" curve is designed much like a spring to absorb the compressive load and is able to handle tensile loads by optimally balancing muscles on the front and back of the spine. With a sedentary lifestyle or sitting for prolonged hours, your body adapts to the hunched-over posture your spine will resemble a "C" curve instead of the nice "S." This not only increases your risk of injury but is also responsible for a long list of symptoms. Are you suffering from headaches, muscle aches and imbalances, tingling and numbness in the extremities, carpal tunnel syndrome, joint pain or dysfunctions, sciatica, chronic fatigue syndrome, and most importantly, poor posture? The reason may just be that.
